Day 1

"To the church of the Thessalonians in God..."

Text: 2 Thessalonians 1:1

THE SECOND EPISTLE TO THE THESSALONIANS

The Apostle Paul felt constrained to write to the Thessalonian Church a second epistle. Once again he included the names of Silvanus (Silas) and Timothy.

“Paul, Silvanus and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and
the Lord Jesus Christ. We are bound to thank God
always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your
faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you
all abounds toward each other.”

2 Thessalonians 1:1-3

1. Greetings

a) Paul, Silvanus and Timothy sent greetings together to the Thessalonians.
b) Standard words of greeting were sent once again (1 Thessalonians 1:1-2).

2. Reasons for writing the second epistle to the Thessalonians

a) Paul felt bound to commend the Thessalonians for their display of faith.
b) The growth of the Thessalonians compelled Paul to write to them glowingly.

3. “We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting”

a) This epistle was written with a strong spirit of thanksgiving to God.
b) Not all churches do well but the Thessalonians stood out significantly.

4. “Because your faith grows exceedingly”

a) The appearance of faith is always exciting.
b) The growth of faith is reason for rejoicing.
c) A faith that grows exceedingly is rare and naturally causes the heart to exult.

5. “And the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other”

a) The evidence of faith was seen in the kind of love displayed.
b) There was such a strong spirit of love in the Thessalonian church.
c) This love was abounding all the time.
d) If love is the fruit of the Spirit, then the Thessalonian church was truly Spirit-filled.
e) The faith and love of the Thessalonians would be even more outstanding because the Church faced persecution from wicked enemies.
