Day 15

"Keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us."

Text: 2 Timothy 1:14

THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Lord Jesus Christ carefully taught His disciples about the Person and the ministry of the Holy Spirit (John 14-16). In His own life, the Lord Jesus exemplified what it meant to be truly Spirit-filled. Four aspects may be highlighted.

1. Anointing for life and ministry (Matthew 3:16-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22; John 1:32-33)

2. Filling (Luke 4:1)
3. Leading (Matthew 4:1)
4. Empowering (Luke 4:14)

EXPERIENCING THE REALITY OF THE SPIRIT’S MINISTRY

The apostle Paul was able to experience the reality of the Holy Spirit working in his own life and ministry. He wrote about this in Romans 8. The following may be noted.

1. The Spirit of God indwells the genuine believer (Romans 8:9).

2. He brings life to the believer (Romans 8:11).

3. He leads (Romans 8:14).

4. He bears witness that we are indeed God’s children (Romans 8:16).

5. He brings forth fruit (Romans 8:23).

6. He helps us in our prayer efforts (Romans 8:26-27).

RELYING ON THE SPIRIT OF GOD

Paul urged Timothy to rely on the Holy Spirit’s help in life and ministry.

“That good thing which was committed to you,
keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.”
2 Timothy 1:14

1. “That good thing which was committed to you”

a) Paul did not elaborate on “that good thing”.
b) The following things have certainly been committed to us:-
i) The gospel
ii) Our faith
iii) Our ministry

2. “Keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us”

a) The word “keep” literally means “to guard”.
b) There must be strong reliance on the Person and Presence of the Spirit of God and His power.

Human strength alone would not be sufficient!
