"The hardworking farmer..."

Text: 2 Timothy 2:6

A THIRD IMAGERY EMPLOYED

The apostle Paul went on to employ a third imagery, this time that of a farmer. All three imageries are best read together. Each one contributes certain ideas.

“The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops.”
2 Timothy 2:6

1. The imagery of a “farmer”

a) The Lord Jesus spoke of a sower (Matthew 13:1-9).
b) James used the imagery of a farmer too (James 5:7).

 

2. “The hardworking farmer”

a) It is well known what a farmer must do if he hopes to be successful.
i) He must be hardworking.
ii) This word conjures up the idea of hard-labour.
iii) No effort is spared to ensure success.
b) The farmer must sow
i) In hope.
ii) In anticipation of success.

 

3. “Must be first to partake of the crops”

a) He rejoices when the harvest comes.
b) He has every reason to look forward to partaking of the crops.
i) He will partake of the crops with relish.
ii) He will partake of the crops with gratitude.
c) He would be the first to celebrate a successful harvest.
d) A good harvest is a fitting reward for the hardworking farmer.

 

A SUMMARY OF THE THREE IMAGERIES EMPLOYED

Paul used the three imageries to communicate the following truths that must be borne in mind when one is seeking to serve the Lord successfully in ministry:-

1. Loyalty and commitment (soldier)

2. Integrity and discipline (athlete)

3. Diligence and patience (farmer)

These principles were found in Paul’s personal life and ministry. He wrote from a wealth of experience
