Day 25

"May the Lord give you understanding..."

Text: 2 Timothy 2:7

SPIRITUAL COMPREHENSION

We often assume understanding of spiritual instruction. The apostle Paul did not take this for granted. He would on his part write as clearly as he could so that Timothy could comprehend what he had written. However, this is his own experience of spiritual comprehension.

“Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you
understanding in all things.”
2 Timothy 2:7

1. “Consider what I say”

a) This was something Timothy would have to do.
b) He must carefully think through what the apostle had said to him.
i) This is the cognitive part.
ii) Timothy must digest what Paul had taught him.
iii) Every effort must be made to comprehend what had been communicated.

2. “And may the Lord give you understanding in all things”

a) There is the Lord’s part.
i) He must give the understanding.
ii) He is the One who gives the enlightenment.
iii) He gives enlightenment through the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:10).
iv) The Spirit reveals the deep things of God (1 Corinthians 2:10).
b) The Spirit of God is directly involved in this matter.
i) He is called “the Spirit of wisdom and revelation” (Ephesians 1:17).
ii) He is the One who opens “the eye of understanding” (Ephesians 1:18).
iii) Only then would there be true knowledge (Ephesians 1:19).

THE SEARCH FOR DEEP SPIRITUAL COMPREHENSION

The Lord Jesus taught His disciples how they may find deep spiritual comprehension.

1. What we hear

“Take heed what you hear. With the same measure you use,
it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given.”
Mark 4:24

2. How we hear

“Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him
more will be given…”
Luke 8:18

3. A noble and good heart

“But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having
heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear
fruit with patience.”
Luke 8:15
