"The things which you have learned and been assured of..."

Text: 2 Timothy 3:14

DEEP LESSONS OF TRUTH

From what we read in Paul’s pastoral letters written to Timothy, many great spiritual truths must have been imparted to Timothy. We can imagine how Timothy must have learned from Paul:-

1. In his role as an apostle.

2. In his capacity as a teacher-mentor.

3. In his relationship as a spiritual father.

THE CHALLENGES AT HAND

There were many challenges that Timothy had to face. Paul urged Timothy to remain faithful and true to what he had been taught.

“But you must continue in the things which you have learned
and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them.”

2 Timothy 3:14

1. “The things which you have learned”

Four areas of learning may be highlighted:-

a) Lessons of basic faith leading to salvation.
b) Lessons of principles of serving the Lord effectively.
c) Lessons of practical righteousness in life.
d) Lessons of suffering for the Lord.

2. “And been assured of”

Assurance would take at least some of the following features:-

a) Deep knowledge with a strong sense of conviction.
b) Remaining strong amidst severe testing.
c) Fruitful life and ministry over the years.

3. “Knowing from whom you have learned them”

There were many apostles from whom Timothy could have learned great truths. But perhaps the most significant teachers who had the most impact on his life must have been the apostle Paul.

a) Paul was a deep and profound teacher.
i) His writings identify him as a great teacher.
ii) No other NT teacher had written as much as Paul did.
b) Paul lived out his life for all to see.
i) Timothy had spent years in the company of his spiritual father.
ii) He must have had great confidence in the apostle Paul as his teacher.
