"Profitable... for correction..."

Text: 2 Timothy 3:16

CORRECTIONS

Few like to be corrected and fewer would accept correction! Nevertheless, correction must take place when things are wrong!

PEOPLE DEEPLY INVOLVED IN THE MINISTRY OF CORRECTION

Both in the Old and New Testament period, a number of people were heavily involved in correcting that which went wrong!

1. The Prophets of old

a) Writing prophets.
b) Non-writing prophets.
c) The prophetic ministry involved a huge amount of corrective work.

2. The Lord Jesus Christ

a) His teachings challenged the wrong ideas held by so many.
b) He sought to correct His disciples time and again.

3. The Apostles

a) They too were involved in correcting people.
i) They addressed wrong doctrines.
ii) They dealt with wrong behaviour.
b) The Epistles of the apostles
i) These address specific problems in the First Century.
ii) The epistles they wrote had a strong corrective element.

THE SCRIPTURES AND THE MINISTRY OF CORRECTION

The Scriptures ought to be used for correcting that which is wrong.

1. The word “correction”

a) It contains the idea of making things “straight”.
b) One of the works of an orthodontist is to help make the teeth straight.
c) This is what “correction” is all about.

2. The ministry of correction

a) This is to be appreciated as something that is approved by the Lord.
b) This ministry is to be received with great humility.
