"He is also Mediator of a better covenant..."

Text: Hebrews 8:6

THE THINGS JESUS HAD TO ACCOMPLISH

There were many things Jesus had to accomplish before He could bring in the new covenant. The Book of Hebrews highlights some of the things Jesus had to do.

“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels,
for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honour,
that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.”
Hebrews 2:9

1. “But we see Jesus”

a) This is the other side of “Behold! My Servant!”
b) Jesus is that Servant of God we must take a careful look at.

2. “Who was made a little lower than the angels”

a) This expression is called a litote.
b) A human being is way below that of an angel!
c) This is a description of what Jesus had to experience (Hebrews 2:3-8)

3. “That He, by the grace of God”

a) Jesus would have to depend on the grace of God as a human being.
b) He would have to experience the grace of God as one who was truly and totally dependent.

4. “Might taste death for everyone”

a) Death must be experienced.
b) In this case Jesus would taste death for everyone.
c) Without His death, He would not be able to bring in the new covenant.

DEFEATING THE DEVIL

The new covenant was different in many ways than all the other covenants that God had graciously given to mankind. This one could only be effected through the death of the Lord Jesus Christ! The following text explains this a little more.

“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood,
He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death
He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime
subject to bondage.”
Hebrews 2:14-15

1. The devil’s control of mankind is through their fear of death.

2. Jesus broke this power of fear when He tasted death for everyone.

3. The resurrection of Jesus removes our fear of death! The power of the devil is thus effectively destroyed!
