Day 22

"I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah"

Text: Amos 1:14

DIVINE JUDGMENT ON AMMON

Rabbah was the capital of Ammon. The Lord pronounced a solemn judgment against the city, and ultimately on Ammon.

“‘But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah,
And it shall devour its palaces,
Amid shouting in the day of battle,
And a tempest in the day of the whirlwind.
Their king shall go into captivity,
He and his princes together,’
Says the LORD.”
Amos 1:14-15

1. “Rabbah”

a) Israel and Ammon had been in conflict on many occasions.
b) Joab fought Rabbah, the royal city of Ammon and captured it in the days of King David (2 Samuel 12:26).

2. “The wall of Rabbah”

a) This was a well-fortified city.
b) It was a difficult city to conquer, even for King David.

3. The palaces

a) Ammon was a wealthy country.
b) The king’s crown weighed a talent of gold and studded with gems (2 Samuel 12:30).
c) The palaces would, understandably, be richly furnished.

4. “The day of battle”

a) There would of course be great “shouting”.
b) The LORD Himself would rise up and raze it to the ground.

PROPHECY AGAINST AMMON

The prophet Jeremiah prophesied strongly against Ammon (Jeremiah 49:1-6).

1. Ammon boasted in Milcom, its main idol.

2. It trusted in its great wealth of treasures, defying anyone to defeat it.

3. Against such arrogance God brought Ammon down.

a) The country would be plundered.
b) The Ammonites would be driven out.
c) Israel would inherit their country instead (Jeremiah 49:2).
