Day 37

"He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets"

Text: Amos 3:7

THE SERVANTS OF GOD

God raised up many servants of His in order to lead and care for His people, whom He called His treasure (Deuteronomy 7:6; 14:2). How He was directly involved is explained in this text.

“Surely the Lord GOD does nothing,
Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.
A lion has roared!
Who will not fear?
The Lord GOD has spoken!
Who can but prophesy?”
Amos 3:7-8

1. “Surely the Lord GOD does nothing unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets”

a) The acts of God
i) They are His prerogatives.
ii) His acts are sovereign.
iii) He does not need to consult with anyone.
b) He does nothing unless He reveals
i) This too is a sovereign choice of God.
ii) He can choose not to inform if He so wishes.
iii) An astute observation was made about God’s revelation.
c) He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets
i) The word “secret” is a reference to His will or decree.
ii) His secret decree is first made known to His servants, the prophets.
iii) Thus, prophets have a very special place in ministry.
iv) They are to proclaim what God has made known to His prophets.
v) All servants maintain appropriate humility recognising that they are but “servants”.

2. “A lion has roared; who will not fear”

a) If a lion roars, it should cause fear.
b) The roar of the lion had been heard, fear is appropriate.

3. “The Lord GOD has spoken! Who can but prophesy”

a) Amos was that prophet of God.
b) God had given him a ministry as a prophet.
c) He had heard a word from the Lord God.

He cannot but prophesy what he had heard from God!
