"I will raise up the tabernacle of David"

Text: Amos 9:11

A GLIMPSE OF A GREAT MESSIANIC PLAN

Judah was also censured by the Lord (Amos 2:4-5) for its transgressions! Nevertheless, God had a special Messianic plan that would involve the house of David. This was disclosed to the prophet Amos.

“On that day I will raise up
The tabernacle of David, which has fallen down,
And repair its damages;
I will raise up its ruins,
And rebuild it as in the days of old.”
Amos 9:11

1. “The tabernacle of David”

a) This is a reference to the house of David.
b) This was also a Messianic reference.

2. God’s promise to David

a) This was recorded in 2 Samuel 7 (Cf. Psalm 89:3-4, 33-37).
b) Part of God’s word to David concerned his earthly kingdom.
c) Another part involved “a throne” which would be “established forever” (2 Samuel 7:16).

3. The sad reality

a) David’s earthly kingdom was shattered badly.
b) Many of the kings were weak or influenced to worship idols.
i) His kingdom had fallen down.
ii) Severe damages were sustained.

4. Restoration of the tabernacle of David

a) God would raise up its ruins.
b) And rebuild it as in the days of old.
c) However, there was another side of this prophecy.
d) The focus would not be on the physical kingdom.
e) Rather it would be an eternal and spiritual kingdom.

5. Messianic reference

a) The Christ (i.e. The Messiah) would come from the line of David.
b) He would be called “The Son of David”.
c) Jesus was that Son of David.
d) He was called “the Christ” (Matthew 1:16-17).

The Wise Men called Him “The King of the Jews” He was worthy of worship (Matthew 2:1-2).
