A High Sense Of Purpose

Text: Colossians 1:25

Paul had a very high sense of purpose as he served the Lord. This was clearly stated in the following text.

“Of which I became a minister according to the stewardship
from God which was given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God.”
Colossians 1:25

1. “Given to me for you”

a) This is in direct reference to his ministry as a minister of God.
b) God had given him a ministry to serve the Gentiles especially.

2. A further glimpse of Paul’s ministry

Paul made other references to his ministry in other texts. The following is an important one that offers a further glimpse of his ministry.

“To which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle,
and a teacher of the Gentiles.”
2 Timothy 1:11

a) He began as a preacher.
b) He was made an apostle later.
c) He was then given a further appointment to become “a teacher of the Gentiles”.

3. Purpose borne in mind

a) God did not merely honour Paul by giving him “titles” (“teacher”, “apostle”).
b) He recognised that there was high purpose.
i) It had to do with the word of God.
ii) It had to do with fulfilment of the word of God.
iii) The offices given to him were meant to be fulfilled.

4. What does fulfilment entail?

The following may be highlighted:-

a) Faith in God that was genuine and strong.
b) Faithfulness to do the tasks assigned to him.
c) Full obedience to the word of God revealed.
d) Fruitfulness in ministry.
e) Fearlessness in battling enemies of the Gospel.
f) Filling of the Spirit of God was to be sought.
