A Glorious Hope

Text: Colossians 1:5

The faith we have in the Lord Jesus Christ is a truly wondrous gift from God. The following text highlights one aspect.

“Because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven,
of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the
gospel.”

Colossians 1:5

1. “Because”

a) Faith in Jesus is not just a nice feeling.

b) Paul cites an important content of the faith we have in Christ.

c) There is “because” element in our faith.

2. “Because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven”

a) The word “hope” is not an empty illusion.

b) Our hope has its underpinnings in heaven itself.

c) We have a sure and certain hope when we have faith in Christ.

d) This hope is “laid up” in heaven.

i) Stored

ii) Reserved

iii) The Person who has made this possible is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.

3. Of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel”

a) This “hope” was part and parcel of the gospel.

b) This “hope” is part and parcel of “the word of the truth of the gospel”.

4. A significant use of the definite article in this text

a) The definite article is used with the following nouns.

i) The hope

ii) The word of the truth

iii) The gospel

b) The definite article was employed carefully for two special reasons:-

i) To specify.

ii) To highlight these truths that are part and parcel of the gospel preached.
