A Christ-Centered Faith

Text: Colossians 2:3

The apostle Paul was one of the staunchest defenders of a Christ-centred faith! Throughout the entire epistle to the Colossians, Paul highlighted the place of the Lord Jesus Christ! In the following text he added another profound word.

1. Major doctrinal statements made concerning Christ

Ten things may be highlighted:-

a) He is the Son of God’s love (Colossians 1:13).
b) Through His blood we have redemption (Colossians 1:14).
c) He is the image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15).
d) He is the Co-Creator (Colossians 1:16).
e) He is the Sustainer of all creation (Colossians 1:17).
f) He is the head of the church (Colossians 1:18).
g) He is to have pre-eminence always (Colossians 1:18).
h) In Him all the fullness of the Godhead dwells (Colossians 1:19).
i) He reconciles all things to Himself (Colossians 1:20).
j) He is able to present all believers holy and blameless before God (Colossians 1:22).

2. Foundational truths

a) These were foundational truths.
b) These doctrines were well-taught and strongly defended by the apostles of Christ.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHT

There were many more things Paul could say about the Lord Jesus Christ. In the following text he added another major teaching.

“In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
Colossians 2:3

1. “In whom”

This is a reference to Christ Jesus.

2. “Hidden”

a) Not revealed yet.
b) The idea of being “hidden” is closely linked to the word “mystery”.

3. Two inter-related things are noted

Knowledge and wisdom are indeed great treasures. They are closely inter-linked to each other. Both are to be found in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ! He cannot be ignored in our quest for the knowledge of God!
