"Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed"

Text: Ecclesiastes 12:6

A WISE RESPONSE RECOMMENDED

Life may be described in many different ways. But no matter how we may treasure this life, it would come to an end one day! A wise response must be given due and careful consideration!

“Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed,
Or the golden bowl is broken,
Or the pitcher shattered at the fountain,
Or the wheel broken at the well.”

Ecclesiastes 12:6

1. Descriptions of life

The following may be said to describe Life in its different ways and aspects!

a) A silver cord
b) A golden bowl
c) A pitcher
d) A wheel

2. Many fanciful explanations have been offered

a) It is wise not to read too much into these expressions.
b) The simplest, or even the most mundane is better than to introduce
foreign ideas into these expressions.

3. The silver cord and the golden bowl

a) In some homes in the ancient days, a lamp may be suspended from
the roof.
b) To make the lamp look good.
i) Silver may be used as a rope.
ii) Bowls for the oil may have gold painted over.
c) The lamp has a shelf life, no matter the material it may be made from.
d) If the “silver cord” is loosed, the “golden bowl” would crash to the
ground and be broken. The life of the lamp is over!
e) Our human life has a definite span too. No matter how the body may
be adorned, with silver and gold, life would end one day!

4. The pitcher and the wheel at the well or fountain

a) In the ancient days, people had to collect water daily:
i) At a fountain
ii) Or at a well
b) Wheels were sometimes used to draw up the water.
c) Pitchers would be used to collect the precious water.
d) But wheels can fail and pitchers can be broken.
e) The mundane things we do in life, they would all end at death.

REMEMBER YOUR CREATOR

1. To remember would include the following nuances:

a) To know
b) To relate
c) To give heed
d) To honour
e) To think of
f) To meditate/ contemplate

2. The Creator

a) God is our Creator.
b) He created us to bear His image.
c) Let us be challenged to reflect the image of our Creator in our life
before death comes and ends everything.

Let us “remember our Creator” consciously and gratefully!
