Ephesians
"Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh- who are called Uncircumcision by what is called Circumcision made in the flesh by hands-"
Text: Ephesians 2:11
EMPLOYMENT OF TERMINOLOGY
Paul knew the sensitivity of the subject he was raising up. He realized that he could have stepped on sensitive toes, for the church in Ephesus was made up largely of Gentiles. How should he use the terms that were “in vogue”?
1. With studied avoidance?
Avoidance was not the answer. To avoid using what was in current usage would serve little purpose.
2. With caution
This was vital. Paul had to exercise utmost caution when he used terms that were potentially provocative. But there were obvious differences between the Jews and the Gentiles and these must be borne in mind and put to good use.
3. With careful qualification
Paul wisely qualified his use of the terms “Circumcision” (“peritome”) and “Uncircumcision” (“akrobustia”). Both terms were used with the phrase “in the flesh” in tow.
a) A neutralizing effect
In using this phrase, Paul sought to neutralize any suggestion that he was a partisan of either the Jewish or Gentile spirit.
b) A theological consideration
The phrase “in the flesh” was used effectively. The theological implication was strong. As far as his theology was concerned, whatever that was “in the flesh” held no spiritual advantage at all.

Paul was not trying to hand a “guilt trip” on the Gentile believers. Forgiveness and redemption must be foremost in the mind not sins of the past.
2. Remembering the differences between the two cultures
The Jewish culture was distinguished from that of the Gentiles. The differences as far as religion were many and of great significance. Two may be highlighted in particular:-
