Ephesians
Day
Day 179

"Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us."

Text: Ephesians 3:20

THE POWER OF GOD THAT WORKS IN US

What a tremendous statement of faith this is. How should we understand this idea of God’s power at work within us? What did Paul have in mind when he wrote about the power of God working in us?

“To Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly…”

Paul was not speaking about great human effort in this text. It is all well and good to desire and work at self-improvement. But this was not what Paul had in mind. He was speaking of God working in our life directly.

“According to the power that works in us”

The word “power” (“dunamin”) is that which the Lord Jesus promised His disciples (Cf. Acts 1:8). That same power was available to all believers. The expression of that power in this context is with reference to Paul’s prayer (strength, love, knowledge etc).

The phrase “that works in us” (“energoumenen”) speaks of God energizing us. Yes, God can and will create special spiritual energy in all believers.

APPRECIATING THE POWER OF GOD AT WORK IN OUR LIVES

Let us take a quick look at the power of God in our life.

1. Illumination and understanding [Ephesians 1:17-18 (Cf. 1 Corinthians 2:10-16)]

If we are able to read and comprehend the Scriptures, we are experiencing the power of God within us.

2. Alive to God [Ephesians 2:5 (Cf. Romans 8:2, 10, 13)]

If we are able to come alive to God, we are experiencing the power of God operating in our life.

3. If we experience the desire to do good works [Ephesians 2:10 (Cf. Titus 3:8)]

If we find ourselves inclined to doing good works, we are experiencing the power of God. The Lord is working within our hearts this great desire and ability to care for others.

4. If we are enjoying a good ministry [Ephesians 3:7 (Cf. Colossians 1:28-29)]

If we are enjoying a fruitful life and ministry, we are experiencing the power of God in our life.

5. If we are experiencing great strength [Ephesians 3:16 (Cf. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10)]

If we are able to find strength to serve the Lord, despite physical infirmities, distresses etc. then we are experiencing the power of God in our life.

ENCOURAGED TO BELIEVE EVEN MORE

As we take time to ponder the power and energy of God in our life, let us draw fresh encouragement. Let us be encouraged to believe in God with even greater depth of understanding and faith. Let us seek to exhibit the work of grace that God is doing in our life.
