Day 195

"Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."

Text: Ephesians 4:3

THE GIFT OF PEACE

Peace with God was one of the great appeals of the gospel. Peace was obtained at a very high price- the death of the Lord Jesus. To Paul, the idea of having peace with God was not something to be taken for granted at any time. Let us recall how carefully he explained how peace with God was made possible.

For He Himself is our peace,
who has made both one, and has broken down
the middle wall of separation.
Having abolished in His flesh the enmity,
that is, the law of commandments contained
in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one
new man from the two, thus making peace
EPHESIANS 2:14-15

In this particular text, the apostle Paul highlighted how peace came about:-

1. Jesus Himself brought about peace.

2. He made it possible for Jews and Gentiles to find the common ground of peace.

3. The law of commandments that characterized the Jewish faith was actually abolished so that Gentiles do not have to keep these laws.

4. The message of peace celebrated the new entity that was created- “a new man from the two”

THE PREACHING OF THE MESSAGE OF PEACE

Jesus Himself proclaimed the message of peace. It was right that His messengers also emphasized peace and harmony among brethren who make up the church community.

And He came and preached peace to you
who were afar off and to those who were near.
EPHESIANS 2:17

Peace among brethren who have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb must be preached eloquently and powerfully, till everyone feels wonderfully bound to each other.

EXTOLLING THE BLESSING OF PEACE

Peace effectively symbolizes harmony. Let us ponder this text written by the psalmist David. Peace was bought at a very high price. May we always treasure and protect the peace and harmony that must exist within the Church.

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brethren to dwell together in unity!
PSALM 133:1
