"Submitting to one another in the fear of God."

Text: Ephesians 5:21

FEATURES OF THE CHRISTIAN WALK

If we were to review our reading of Ephesians 5 thus far, we would notice that Paul was giving strong advice as to how one may maintain his Christian walk. Let’s summarise the things he has admonished. Seven things may be highlighted:-

1. Circumspection (Ephesians 5:15)

2. Redemption of time (Ephesians 5:16)

3. Comprehension of God’s will (Ephesians 5:17)

4. Filling of the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18)

5. Fellowshipping with believers (Ephesians 5:19)

6. Giving of thanks (Ephesians 5:20)

7. Submission to each other (Ephesians 5:21)

SUBMISSION- A CHALLENGING VIRTUE TO CULTIVATE

Each of the above features is most challenging. The last one would probably be the most challenging one of all.

1. Children find it hard to submit to their parents.

2. People find it hard to submit to authority.

3. Christians find it hard to practice submission to each other.

LACK OF SUBMISSION

This will lead to all kinds of interpersonal relationship problems. If this problem is not tackled carefully, the church may well be in danger of schism.

IN THE FEAR OF GOD

How may we cultivate this virtue? Paul suggests that it is possible to practise mutual submission if we apply the principle of “the fear of God”. Here’s how:-

1. Be conscious of the Presence of the Lord always.

2. Reverence of he Lord and His commandments (including this word).

3. Exercise humble understanding and appreciation of each other as members of the Body of Christ.
