Day 291

"For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church."

Text: Ephesians 5:29

PROBLEMS IN LIFE

Problems in life can deteriorate badly. People can end up “hating” each other. Spouses can end up with bitter hatred for each other. This was Paul’s deep concern for all who were in the married state.

DEEP CONTRAST BETWEEN LOVE AND HATRED

The contrast between love and hatred had to be highlighted. This problem had to be nipped in the bud. Paul’s attempt to deal with this problem is insightful.

1. “No one ever hated his own flesh”

Hatred of one’s flesh is most unnatural. He extends this thought to the idea of love for one’s spouse. From childhood to old age, no one actually hates his own flesh!

2. “But nourishes and cherishes it”

a) “Nourishes” (“ektrephei”)

This word is often used with reference to rearing children. Great care and attention are paid to the upbringing of children. The concept of caring for one’s spouse includes this idea, expressed by the word “nourishes”.

b) “Cherishes” (“thalpo”)

The idea behind this word is that of “comfort”. Children need comfort in times of anxiety and distress. The idea of offering comfort is included in the word “cherishes”.

THE EXAMPLE OF THE LORD JESUS AGAIN

Once again, Paul pointed his readers to the example of the Lord Jesus. How does He regard the Church? Surely, He nourishes and cherishes it. The expressions of the Lord’s care for the Church is unmistakable. The following are some examples of His work of nourishing and caring for the Church.

1. He continues to provide for the needs of the Church.

2. He continues to protect the Church.

3. He continues to hear and answer the petitions of the Church offered in prayer.

4. He continues to make His Presence known to His church.

5. He continues to love the Church, seeking always to intercede for it.

In like manner, all Christian husbands are to nourish and cherish their spouses.
