"Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the LORD descended upon it..." Exodus 19:18

Text: Exodus 24 : 15-18

AN AWESOME SIGHT

When the children of Israel saw how Mount Sinai was engulfed with smoke, they trembled at the Presence of God (Cf. Exodus 20:18-19). Who would dare ascend the mountain? Who could survive?

Moses went up Mount Sinai time and again. He would always return safely. But more importantly, he would come back full of excitement because he had received fresh teachings from the Lord.

ASCENDING THE MOUNTAIN OF GOD YET AGAIN

God had called Moses to ascend Mount Sinai again! Promptly, Moses made plans to sit at the feet of the Lord! A new sense of excitement must have filled his heart for the Lord had promised that He would give him tablets of stone that He would personally write!

“Then Moses went up into the mountain,
and a cloud covered the mountain.
Now the glory of the LORD rested on Mount Sinai,
and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day
He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud.”
EXODUS 24:15-16

The glory of the Lord was once again displayed for good reason! The rest of the nation of Israel who were not given the privilege of ascending the holy mountain must know that that they had a great and Living God!

THE PROBLEM OF TAKING GOD FOR GRANTED

The Person of the LORD God must never be taken for granted! Unfortunately, Israel had fallen into the habit of taking too many things for granted! All that God had done for them were forgotten whenever a crisis came up! All that God had said may have received a good hearing, but how long that impact lasted was yet to be seen!

A GLORIOUS REMINDER

God gave Israel all the help it needed! He allowed His glory to remain on Mount Sinai for days on end! Would that not help them to stand in awe of God?

“The sight of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire
on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel.
So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into
the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days
and forty nights.”
EXODUS 24:17-18

It would take a great man of courage and faith to ascend that awesome mountain!
