Ezekiel
"The firmament above"
Text: Ezekiel 1:22
ANOTHER FEATURE
Ezekiel was highly observant. He noticed vital details of the vision that was shown to him. Careful observation of details was something that all prophets did.
“The likeness of the firmament above the heads of the living creatures was like
the colour of an awesome crystal, stretched out over their heads.
And under the firmament their wings spread out straight, one toward another.
Each one had two which covered one side,
and each one had two which covered the other side of the body.”
Ezekiel 1:22-23
1. A firmament.
a) This was noticed.
b) It stood above the heads of the living creatures.
2. The colour of the firmament.
a) It was compared to “an awesome crystal”.
b) It stretched out over their heads.
3. The wings of the living creatures.
a) One pair of wings stretched out straight.
b) Another pair covered their body.
c) The living creatures displayed:
i) Appropriate humility.
ii) In their humility there was great dignity.
iii) Despite their high position they remained humble.
4. The firmament that God created.
“Then God said,
‘Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters,
and let it divide the waters from the waters.’
Thus God made the firmament,
and divided the waters which were under the firmament
from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so.
And God called the firmament Heaven.
So the evening and the morning were the second day.”
Genesis 1:6-8
a) We only read about the firmament that God made.
b) Ezekiel actually saw the firmament.
i) He compared it to an awesome crystal.
ii) It must have been very clear and beautiful in its clarity.
