Ezekiel
"And I will establish My covenant with you"
Text: Ezekiel 16:62
AN EVERLASTING COVENANT
This was graciously offered to erring Israel. This covenant must be understood in the light of the “new covenant” mentioned in Jeremiah 31.
“‘Nevertheless I will remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth,
and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.
Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed,
when you receive your older and your younger sisters;
for I will give them to you for daughters,
but not because of My covenant with you.
And I will establish My covenant with you.
Then you shall know that I am the Lord,
that you may remember and be ashamed,
and never open your mouth anymore because of your shame,
when I provide you an atonement for all you have done,’ says the Lord God.”
Ezekiel 16:60-63
1. The old covenant.
a) It will be remembered by the Lord.
b) But both Israel and Judah had abandoned this covenant.
c) They had been duly judged and punished.
d) They will remember their old covenant with shame in their heart.
2. What was needed?
a) God will need to provide an atonement for the sins of Israel.
b) That atonement would not be the usual offerings required by the Old Testament laws.
c) That atonement was revealed elsewhere.
d) That atonement for the New Covenant.
i) The Messiah would have to be the Lamb of God.
ii) Only He can take away the sins of Israel and the world (John 1:29).
3. The New Covenant
“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord,
when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—
not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day
that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt,
My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord.
But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days,
says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts;
and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
No more shall every man teach his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying,
‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me,
from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord.
For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
Jeremiah 31:31-34
