"Another great eagle"

Text: Ezekiel 17:7

ANOTHER GREAT EAGLE

The riddle/parable expanded to include the mention of another great eagle. Historically, this was a reference to Egypt who was also a major power in those days.

“But there was another great eagle with large wings and many feathers;
And behold, this vine bent its roots toward him,
And stretched its branches toward him,
From the garden terrace where it had been planted,
That he might water it.
It was planted in good soil by many waters,
To bring forth branches, bear fruit,
And become a majestic vine.”
Ezekiel 17:7-8

1. Description of the second eagle.

a) It was a great eagle.

b) It had large wings and many feathers.

c) Egypt was described in a similar manner to display the nation’s power.

2. The vine.

a) This was Israel.

b) The vine was attracted to the second eagle

c) It stretched its branches to the second eagle.

d) The vine was well-placed on “the garden terrace”.

e) It sought its source of water from the second eagle.

3. In this new arrangement.

a) The vine was now planted in good soil.

b) An abundance of water was now made available to the vine.

c) New branches appeared.

d) The vine was even more fruitful.

e) It was no longer a lowly vine.

f) It had become “a majestic vine”.
