"My sword shall go out of its sheath"

Text: Ezekiel 21:4

DIVINE JUDGMENT

The Lord declared that divine judgment would take place. All in the land of Judah would suffer grave consequences.

“Because I will cut off both righteous and wicked from you,
therefore My sword shall go out of its sheath
against all flesh from south to north,
that all flesh may know that I, the Lord,
have drawn My sword out of its sheath;
it shall not return anymore.”
Ezekiel 21:4-5

1. Who would suffer?

a) The wicked would be dealt with.

b) The righteous would also suffer.

2. An important explanatory note concerning “the righteous”.

a) Human righteousness is relative.

b) There is no human being who is perfectly righteous.

c) Everyone has some sins in life that would have to be dealt with.

3. The unsheathed sword that God would wield.

a) It is a reference to the war that Babylon would wage against Judah.

b) The obviously wicked who are rebellious would perish.

c) The relatively righteous ones would also face death because of the war with Babylon.

4. The war would engulf the land.

a) Jerusalem would be affected.

b) The “holy places” would not be spared.

c) From South to North, the war would affect the whole nation.

5. Recognition of the Lord’s hand.

a) There would be realisation that God has caused this war.

b) All would recognize the sovereignty of God.

c) In His divine will, He would not sheath the divine sword till all that He had purposed is fully accomplished.
