"The king of Babylon started his siege"

Text: Ezekiel 24:2

AN IMPORTANT EVENT

The word of God came to Ezekiel. The prophet had prophesied the chastisement and ruin of Jerusalem. The commencement of the siege was carefully noted.

“Again, in the ninth year, in the tenth month,
on the tenth day of the month,
the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
‘Son of man, write down the name of the day, this very day—
the king of Babylon started his siege
against Jerusalem this very day.'”
Ezekiel 24:1-2

1. The commencement of the siege of Jerusalem.

a) This was carefully noted.

i) The ninth year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar.

ii) On the tenth day of the tenth month.

b) This was a fateful day for Jerusalem.

i) The siege of Jerusalem had begun on this day.

ii) This was a day that Jerusalem would never forget.

2. This date was remembered by the chroniclers.

a) It was mentioned in 2 Kings 25:1. The details were the same.

b) The armies of Nebuchadnezzar were mentioned in this text.

3. This date was also noted in Jeremiah 39:1 and 52:4.

a) Nebuchadnezzar was named.

b) The armies of Nebuchadnezzar had ranged themselves against Jerusalem.

4. This date was commemorated by the Exiled Jews.

a) It became a special day of fasting.

b) Zechariah 8:19 took note of the focus on fasting to remember this fateful day by those who were exiled from Jerusalem.

c) Jerusalem would suffer terribly under the Babylonian siege.
