"I will leave a remnant"

Text: Ezekiel 6:8

A REMNANT

What would become of Israel if Jerusalem was to be destroyed and the people scattered? This was a worrying thought.

“Yet I will leave a remnant,
so that you may have some who escape the sword among the nations,
when you are scattered through the countries.
Then those of you who escape
will remember Me among the nations where they are carried captive,
because I was crushed by their adulterous heart which has departed from Me,
and by their eyes which play the harlot after their idols;
they will loathe themselves for the evils which they committed
in all their abominations.
And they shall know that I am the LORD;
I have not said in vain that I would bring this calamity upon them.”
Ezekiel 6:8-10

1. The concept of a Remnant.

a) This was taught by Isaiah the prophet (Isaiah 1:9).

b) This was mentioned in Jeremiah’s prophecy (Jeremiah 42:2).

c) Ezekiel was informed on this matter (Ezekiel 6:8).

2. Who are the remnant?

a) They escaped the sword.

b) They are scattered abroad.

3. The remnant will remember the LORD.

a) They would remember the LORD and all the warnings He gave.

b) They would also remember the anguish (pain and sorrow) of the LORD.

i) Israel had an adulterous heart.

ii) The nation had departed from the LORD.

iii) They had forsaken their God in favour of the idols they worshipped.

iv) They had also chosen a life of evil as they became corrupted by the things they learned from idolatry.

4. God’s word.

a) The remnant would now realise that God’s word was not spoken in vain.

b) His word had come to pass.

i) Jerusalem would be crushed.

ii) The people scattered.

iii) The remnant would greatly regret their sinful ways.

iv) The calamity that God had forewarned would come to pass.
