"And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me."

Text: Psalm 51:11

OBSERVATION OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE DEPARTURE OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD

David personally saw how the Spirit of the LORD departed from King Saul. He saw how Saul deteriorated in his life. The following sins and weaknesses began to grip his life and then finally destroy him.

1. Rebellion 1 Samuel 15:23

2. Stubbornness 1 Samuel 15:23

3. Rejection of the word of the Lord 1 Samuel 15:23

4. Dismay and fear 1 Samuel 17:11

5. Anger 1 Samuel 18:8

6. Murderous cunning 1 Samuel 18:17

7. Vengefulness 1 Samuel 19:1-24

8. Suicide 1 Samuel 31:1-6

FEAR OF THE DEPARTURE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

David rightly feared the departure of the Spirit of God from his life. Thus he wrote these words in his prayer to the Lord.

“Do not cast me away from Your presence,
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.”
Psalm 51:11-12

1. “Do not take Your Holy Spirit from me”

a) It would mean that David could possibly be cast aside.
b) It would also mean that David would descend further into the realms of sin and darkness.
c) Hence this impassioned plea that the Holy Spirit be not taken away from his life and ministry.

2. “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation”

a) David had seen how King Saul had become more and more depressed.
b) There was no joy in his heart; instead there was great fear and foreboding.
c) Joy is a significant fruit of the Holy Spirit.

3. “Uphold me by Your generous Spirit”

a) The Spirit of God is needed not only for anointing but upholding.
b) The significance of the Spirit’s work in life and ministry must be noted carefully.
c) His power to uphold must be a prayer brought to the Lord.
