"The supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ."

Text: Philippians 1:19

AN INTERESTING INSIGHT

The Apostle Paul wrote extensively about the Person and Ministry of the Holy Spirit in his epistles. We have an interesting text here about the Spirit of God.

“For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through
your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.”
Philippians 1:19

1. “I know”

a) The word “know” suggests “full and confident knowledge”.
b) There was a strong sense of certainty in Paul’s heart and mind.
c) The Greek word used here is “oida” (Perfective idea).

2. “That this will turn out for my deliverance”

a) The word “deliverance” is also the regular word for “salvation”.
b) Paul was in prison when he wrote Philippians.
c) In this context, he was writing to share with the Philippians that he was very sure that he would be delivered from prison.

3. “Through your prayer”

a) One of the reasons why Paul expressed such a sense of certainty was mentioned here.
b) He believed that the prayers of the Philippians had been heard and God would respond to their intercession favourably.
c) Thus he would see God giving him deliverance from his imprisonment.

4. “And the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ”

a) This was an unusual title to describe the Holy Spirit.
b) Paul was obviously referring to the Spirit of God.
c) This title is best understood with the word “supply”.
i) It was the Lord Jesus Christ who said that He would pray for the Spirit of God to be given.
ii) The word “supply” may also be translated “support” or “help”.
iii) The Spirit of God would indeed be that special source of “support” (“supply”).
iv) He is directly related to the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
v) Hence this special title to describe the Holy Spirit as “the Spirit of Jesus Christ”.
vi) Paul must have experienced the special ministry of the Spirit of God while in prison.
vii) He must have intimated to Paul that soon there will be deliverance; hence the certainty.
