"The Spirit expressly says..."

Text: 1 Timothy 4:1

THE PASTORAL EPISTLES

The Pastoral Epistles (1 and 2 Timothy and Titus) were written by the Apostle Paul to two of his proteges, Timothy and Titus.

1. Focus of the Pastoral Epistles

a) Instruction
i) Facing the threat of false teachings.
ii) Selection and appointment of leaders in the church.
iii) Personal and practical advice.
b) Inspiration
i) Glimpses of Paul’s personal life and ministry were shared to inspire.
ii) Personal exhortation to serve the Lord faithfully.

2. References to the Holy Spirit

a) There were some references.
b) However, the focus of the Pastoral Epistles was not about the Holy Spirit.

3. The Holy Spirit’s ministry

a) With reference to salvation (Titus 3:5-6)
b) His role was declared:
i) Regeneration and renewing.
ii) This is the special work of the Holy Spirit.
c) Teaching (1 Timothy 4:1)
i) He admonishes.
ii) He warns of the tough circumstances that will come in the latter days.

THE MENTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Though there is less mention, this does not mean that His ministry is not important. Two things must be borne in mind.

1. In the General Pauline Epistles

Paul had already written about the role of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit’s role must be noted carefully at all times, even if He is not specifically mentioned.

2. In the Pastoral Epistles

Paul did not feel the need to state again and again what he had already written elsewhere about the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Thus, there is relatively less mention of the Holy Spirit.
