Day 102

"An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression of the wicked: There is no fear of God before his eyes." Psalm 36:1

Text: Genesis 19:1-38

ANGELIC VISITORS

There is now a clear statement concerning the identity of the heavenly visitors. The following text makes their identification very clear.

“Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening,
and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them,
he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face
toward the ground. And he said, ‘Here now, my lords,
please turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night,
and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.’
And they said, ‘No, but we will spend the night in
the open square.’ But he insisted strongly; so they turned in
to him and entered his house. Then he made them a feast,
and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.”

GENESIS 19:1-3

LOT’S SOCIAL STANDING IN SODOM

Lot must have done quite well in Sodom. He was described as one who was “sitting in the gate of Sodom”. This would suggest that he was quite well established as a member of the community in the city. The gates of ancient days were the centers of commerce. They were also places where leaders of the community functioned as “judges”.

THE HOSPITALITY SHOWN BY LOT

The hospitality Lot showed the two angelic visitors almost paralleled that practised by Abraham. This could well reflect the influence that must have rubbed off from his uncle.

1. There was humility

Perhaps the bearing of the angelic visitors caused Lot to be even more polite than usual. But there was an obvious display of humility in Lot’s demeanour.

2. Appropriate regard for the Angelic visitors

They were well provided for. Their feet were washed. A veritable “feast” was presented to them.

3. Protection from the elements and the denizens of Sodom

Lot knew Sodom only too well. Thus he opened his home to the angelic visitors. He did not want them to be exposed to the elements in the night. Deep down, he knew that there was more to fear from those who lived in Sodom!

Lot would make up one of the 10 righteous people Abraham mentioned. Would there be 9 other righteous in the city of Sodom?
