Genesis
"But the wicked shall perish; and the enemies of the Lord. Like the splendour of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke they shall vanish away." Psalm 37:20
Text: Genesis 19:1-38
CLOSED TO ANY KIND OF REASONING
The men of Sodom were fixed on only one thing. They wanted to sodomize the angelic visitors! As the mob listened to Lot, the mood became uglier by the minute.
“And they said, ‘Stand back!’
Then they said, ‘This one came in to stay here,
and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse
with you than with them.’ So they pressed hard against
the man Lot, and came near to break down the door.”GENESIS 19:9
Lot’s pleas were rejected. Just how well the men of Sodom thought of Lot was reflected in this text! They didn’t think much of him at all! He was nothing more than just a foreigner in their midst. They obviously didn’t like him very much! Their hearts were so filled with evil that they were closed to any kind of reasoning. The restless mob suddenly became violent.
RESCUED BY THE ANGELS
Lot thought that he would do his part to protect his angelic guests. Little did he know that they would rescue him instead.
“But the men (angels) reached out their hands and pulled Lot
into the house with them, and shut the door. And they struck
the men (Sodomites) who were at the doorway of the house
with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary
trying to find the door.”GENESIS 19:10-11
1. Angelic authority and power
The angels possessed tremendous power and authority! They pulled Lot away from the angry mob. They had to resort to striking the mob with blindness, in order to rescue Lot from their clutches. They would probably have torn him to pieces.
2. Blind and Yet Bent on Sin
How sin gripped the men of Sodom. They were struck blind and yet they were still “trying to find the door” of Lot’s house! To lose one’s sight has got to be one of the most traumatic experiences of life. Yet, these men from Sodom were still bent on breaking down Lot’s door so that they deal with him, and have their way with the angelic visitors!
A SIMPLE QUOTA OF 10 RIGHTEOUS MEN
Where were the 10 righteous men Abraham pleaded on behalf of? The quota seems so small! Yet, the sad fact was that this quota could not even be filled. Such is the rampant and pervasive power of sin!
