Day 146

"The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way." Psalm 37:23

Text: Genesis 24 : 1 - 67

A WONDERFUL MASTER-SERVANT RELATIONSHIP

A great master-servant relationship between Abraham and this most trusted servant. Let us take time to ponder and appreciate the relation that existed between the two men.

1. Trust

This trusted servant, most likely Eliezer of Damascus “ruled over all that he (Abraham) had” (Genesis 24:2). He was entrusted with a great responsibility – that of traveling a long distance to look for a prospective wife for Isaac.

2. Faith

Abraham could speak to him about the Lord. He could even ask him to swear an oath in the Name of the LORD. That would suggest strongly that this man had come to believe in the God of Abraham.

3. Open and Honest friendship

There was a good, open and honest relationship between them. Frank opinions were discussed openly! Though technically, there was a master-servant relationship, there was obviously a strong sense of friendship between Abraham and Eliezer!

A STRONG ADMONITION

Abraham spoke with passion about his faith in the Lord. He encouraged his trusted servant and friend to exercise his faith as he embarked on his journey. A strong word of admonition was given at the outset of the journey.

“The Lord God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house
and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and
swore to me, saying, ‘To your descendants I give this land,
He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife
for my son from there. And if the woman is not willing to
follow you, then you will be released from this oath; only
do not take my son back there.’ So the servant put his hand under
the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning
this matter.”

GENESIS 24:7-9

What a powerful way of describing the Lord! He was obviously very real to Abraham.

  1. He was the Lord God of Heaven!
  2. He was the One who had been leading all this while.
  3. He was the One who spoke to Abraham and gave him many precious promises!
  4. He would send His angel to guide Eliezer in his task!

What a great impression Abraham must have made on Eliezer!
