Day 189

"For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practise; but what I hate, that I do." Romans 7:15

Text: Genesis 27:1-46

THE POWER OF SIN OVER JACOB

What was Jacob thinking, as he hastened to do his mother’s bidding? Was he really going to go through with the charade? If so, he would sin terribly, in at least four ways!

1. He would be deceiving his father.

2. He would be defrauding his brother.

3. He would be exposing his mother to the danger of receiving his father’s curse!

4. He would personally be guilty of perpetrating evil!

The Biblical text solemnly bears witness to the evil that had penetrated so deeply into Isaac’s family. Jacob complied to do evil!

“And he went and got them and brought them to his mother,
and his mother made savoury food, such as his father loved.”

GENESIS 27:14

THE POWER OF SIN OVER REBEKAH

The grip of sin was both vicious and tenacious. Not only had it gripped hold of Jacob, it also controlled Rebekah!

Then Rebekah took the choice clothes of her elder son Esau,
which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob
her younger son. And she put the skins of the kids of the goats
on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. Then she gave
the savoury food and the bread, which she had prepared, into
the hand of her son Jacob.”

GENESIS 27:15-17

How should Rebekah’s sin be described? She too sinned terribly in at least four ways!

1. She betrayed her husband by what she did. She took advantage of his weaknesses!

2. She encouraged Jacob to sin. It was Rebekah who urged Jacob to do her bidding!

3. She wronged Esau, her elder son!

4. She would be personally guilty of not just scheming to do evil, but the performance of the foul deed!

Was the firstborn blessing really worth so much?
