Day 194

"Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all sins." Proverbs 10:12

Text: Genesis 27:1-46

NOT A MOMENT TOO SOON

Jacob couldn’t get out of his father’s presence soon enough. As soon as the pronouncement of blessing was over, he excused himself and got out of his father’s tent – and not a moment too soon! Receiving such a great blessing would have been a special occasion to celebrate, but not in this instance. Jacob knew that he had stolen his brother’s firstborn blessing!

“Now it happened, as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob,
And Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his
father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting. He also had made savoury food, and brought it to his father, and said to his father, ‘Let my father arise and eat of his son’s game, that your soul may bless me.'”

GENESIS 27:30-31

How narrowly Jacob escaped a confrontation with his brother Esau! How would he have explained to his brother why he had put on his clothes? How would he have explained the skins of the kids of the goat on his hands?

IN GREAT TREPIDATION

Those words sounded so familiar! Had not Isaac just heard those words?

“Then Isaac trembled exceedingly, and said, ‘Who?
Where is the one who hunted game and brought it to me?
I ate all of it before you came , and I have blessed him –
and indeed he shall be blessed.'”

GENESIS 27:33

“Isaac trembled exceedingly”

How may we understand why Isaac was described as having “trembled exceedingly”?

1. Recognition of “mistake”

At first, there was confusion. That gave way to realization that he had made a “mistake”.

2. Grief for his beloved elder son

Isaac must have grieved over the fact that his favourite son was not the recipient of his blessing. He had poured his heart into the pronouncement of that blessing!

3. Disappointment that Jacob had deceived him and defrauded his brother

Isaac must have been most upset with his younger son! How could Jacob have done what he did?

4. Awareness that Jacob would be blessed indeed

Jacob would be blessed indeed! Isaac must have recognized that God’s Word to Rebekah would be fulfilled. That thought must have added to his trembling!
