"What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?" Psalm 8:4

Text: Genesis 9:1-28

THE SIGN OF THE NOAHIC COVENANT

The magnitude of the implications of the Noahic Covenant would leave anyone speechless! Noah did not say a word in response as he listened to God declaring His Covenant with him and all the living creatures He made. In order to assure Noah and his sons that the Covenant was genuine and steadfast, God gave them a special sign.

“And God said: ‘This is the sign of the Covenant
which I make between Me and you, and every living creature
that is with you, for perpetual generations: I set My rainbow
in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the Covenant between
Me and the earth. It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth,
that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; and I will remember
My Covenant which is between Me and you and every living
creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood
to destroy all flesh. The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will
look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God
and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. And God
said to Noah, ‘This is the sign of the Covenant which I have
established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

GENESIS 9:12-17

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SIGN OF THE RAINBOW

A number of things may be highlighted concerning the significance of the Sign of the Rainbow.

1. It has Universal Implications

God did not declare the Noahic Covenant in a corner. The Rainbow, painted in the sky displayed universal implications! God’s promise expressed in the Noahic Covenant would be honoured!

2. Perpetual Generations/ Everlasting Covenant

The Noahic Covenant would last for “perpetual generations”. As long as a rainbow can be formed, so will God always honour His Word!

3. Established between Me and all Flesh

The sign of the Rainbow established for a fact the reality and the relevance of the Noahic Covenant for all time!

4. “I Will Remember”

Once again, we see another effective use of the first personal pronoun. God made a solemn promise that whenever He sees the sign of the Rainbow, He would remember what He had promised and then go about fulfilling it!
