"The just shall live by his faith"

Text: Habakkuk 2:4

LIVING BY FAITH ROBUSTLY

To speak of having faith in God is easy enough. To live by faith is another different proposition altogether! The children of Israel spoke of having faith in God but the reality of faith must be evidenced in life!

“Behold the proud,
His soul is not upright in him;
But the just shall live by faith.”
Habakkuk 2:4

1. “Behold the proud”

a) Pride is a problem that seems to afflict mankind badly.
b) It is found in children and in adults.
c) It is found in every nation.
d) Israel suffered from the problem of pride.
e) Judah also had this problem of pride.
f) Babylon certainly swelled with pride in their power to conquer many nations.

2. “His soul is not upright in him”

a) The problem of pride is deeper than meets the eye.
b) The depth of the problem reaches to the level of the soul.
c) Pride stems from a proud soul/spirit.
d) And a proud spirit is “not upright!”

3. “But the just shall live by faith”

a) What does it mean to be “just?”
A primary meaning is that of being characterized by “righteousness” or “uprightness”.
b) Who may be described as “just?”
i) It is the person who has found genuine faith in God.
ii) The Lord then declares him “just” or “righteous”.
iii) Righteousness is then imputed to him by God Himself.
c) How may we know that the person is truly “just?”
i) The individual will display uprightness in his life.
ii) He will live righteously.
iii) He will live by his faith in God.
iv) The genuineness of his faith in God will be truly evidenced in his actions in life.
