Day 28

"His glory covered the heavens"

Text: Habakkuk 3:3

ENVISAGING THE VISIT OF THE LORD

Habakkuk understood and pictured God coming to the earth as a Divine Judge with supreme power. The Lord Himself would come and administer Divine justice.

“God came from Teman,
The Holy One from Mount Paran.
His glory covered the heavens,
And the earth was full of His praise.”
Habakkuk 3:3

1. The passage of the Chaldeans

a) The Chaldeans would march their troops into the Middle East.
b) Along the way they would engage in so much evil that their so-called glory was their shame.

2. The passage of the Lord God

a) Habakkuk envisaged the coming of the Lord too.
b) The route He would take would cover two well-known areas.
i) Teman which was in Edom (mountainous area)
ii) Mount Paran (Israel… also a mountainous area)
c) When God first revealed Himself to Israel it was at Mount Sinai (another mountain range).

The mention of the mountains mounted the greatness of the Lord God as He came to His people.

3. The Person of the Lord

a) He was totally unlike the Chaldeans.
b) He was well-described as “The Holy One”.
c) He would come to His people, both to rescue them and to chastise them for their sinfulness.

4. Further description of the Lord with awe and adoration

a) He is full of glory.
i) God’s glory is intrinsic within Himself.
ii) The greatness of His glory is described as being so extensive it covered the heavens.
iii) The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork (Psalm 19:1).
b) The earth was full of His praise.
i) The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness (Psalm 24:1).
ii) The Lord Himself laid the foundation of the earth (Psalm 104:5).
iii) The earth is full of Your possessions (Psalm 104:24).
