Day 34

"You walked through the sea with Your horses"

Text: Habakkuk 3:15

JOINED IN BATTLE

Habakkuk sought to describe the battle that was joined! The feared Chaldeans would not simply lay down their arms in meek surrender. They would resist and fight the Lord and His anointed.

“You thrust through with his own arrows
The head of his villages.
They came out like a whirlwind to scatter me;
Their rejoicing was like feasting on the poor in secret.
You walked through the sea with Your horses,
Through the heap of great waters.”
Habakkuk 3:14-15

1. “You”

This is a reference to the Lord. He is actively and personally involved in the battle against evil empires!

2. “Thrust through with his own arrows the head of his villages”

a) This may be a description of the enemies turning against each other.
b) This is not surprising for the Chaldean army was made up of people from all over.
c) Not all heads of villages led their people well.
d) Sometimes the head of the village may be murdered by his own people.
His own arrows would be used to kill him.

3. The rebel villagers

a) They became marauders.
b) They attacked the weaker ones like a whirlwind.

4. Description of these marauders

a) They sought to scatter the people they fought against.
b) They were sometimes successful in their attacks against hapless victims. (Habakkuk may have witnessed one such attack.)
c) Their rejoicing
i) They robbed poorer villages but the poor villages had nothing much for the marauders to plunder.
ii) Nevertheless, these marauders rejoiced in whatever pickings they could find.
iii) “Feasting on the poor in secret” was their way of rejoicing (Normal to celebrate conquests).
iv) Their “victories” were not great things they could boast about in great feasts.

5. “You walked through the sea with Your horses, through the heap of great waters”

In the ancient past the seas were a problem to mighty nations. They did not have a naval force to boast of. But to the Lord, the mighty seas were nothing at all. He walked through the great seas as if it was land!
