Hebrews
Day
Day 16

"You, Lord, from the beginning laid the foundation of the earth."

Text: Hebrews 1:10

THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY

It is sometimes challenging to figure out identities. Take for example the following text.

“You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.'”
Hebrews 1:10

We have an intriguing problem as to the identity of the Person called “Lord”.

1. Quotation from Psalm 102:25-27

a) The original context would suggest that God (the Father) is in mind.
b) In the Old Testament, He is often identified as Creator.

2. Application in Hebrews 1:10

a) The author of Hebrews applies the text to the Son.
b) The Son has already been identified as Co-Creator with the Father (Hebrews 1:2)
c) The conjunction “and” (Hebrews 1:10) makes this connection to the previous verse even more obvious that the reference is to the Son of God.

3. Interpretation of Hebrews 1:10

a) This verse would expand the idea of the Son of God as Creator.

“…through whom also He made the worlds.”
Hebrews 1:2

b) The phrase would be best read as the Father speaking to the Son.

“You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundations
of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands.”
Hebrews 1:10

c) This text is to be read as a further contrast to the angels of God.

“And of the angels He says,
‘Who makes His angels spirits and His ministers
a flame of fire.'”
Hebrews 1:7

4. The Point of it all

a) To identify Jesus as greater than the angels.
b) He is Co-Creator with God the Father (He is both God and Lord – Hebrews 1:8,10).
