Day 17

"They will perish, but You remain..."

Text: Hebrews 1:11

THE PERISHABLE NATURE OF THINGS CREATED

One of the most humbling features about the created world is that ultimately all things perish! This thought was the sobering theme of a number of psalms.

King David mused on this subject in the following psalm.

“Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths,
and my age is as nothingbefore You;
Certainly every man at his best state is but vapour.
Surely every man walks about like a shadow?”
Psalm 39:5-6

Moses also wrote in a similar vein in the following psalm.

“You turn man to destruction, and say,
‘Return, O children of men.’
For a thousand years in Your sight,
Are like yesterday when it is past,
And like a watch in the night.”
Psalm 90:3-4

THE IMMORTAL NATURE OF THE SON OF GOD

The author of Hebrews makes a strong contrast between the Co-Creator, the Son of God, in the following text. The immediate literary context must be borne in mind.

“You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.
They will perish, but You remain;
And they will all grow old like a garment;
Like a cloak You will fold them up,
And they will be changed.
But You are the same.
And Your years will not fail.”
Hebrews 1:10-12

1. The Co-Creating Son of God is the main subject here.

2. He is contrasted with the things He has made.

a) The heavens
b) The earth

3. Heaven and earth can and will perish in due time.

4. The Co-Creating Son of God remains constant.

He is “the same” and “(His) years will not fail”. These words were spoken by God the Father to His only begotten Son- and not to the angels!
