"The express image of His person..."

Text: Hebrews 1:3b

IN THE IMAGE OF GOD

Contrary to popular understanding, the Bible does not describe Man as the species right at the top of the food chain. Man has a dignity that no other living creature possesses. The Scriptures describe man as a special creation of God- made in His own image!

“So God created man in His own image;
in the image of God He created him;
male and female He created them.”

Genesis 1:27

THE FIRST ADAM

The apostle Paul developed a strong theology with reference to Adam (Cf. Romans 5; 1 Corinthians 15). Here is a summary of the main features:-

1. Through Adam sin entered into the world (Cf. Romans 5:12a).

2. Through sin death came upon all mankind (Cf. Romans 5:12b).

3. Adam was a type of Christ who was to come (Cf. Romans 5:14).

 

THE SECOND ADAM

The apostle Paul also developed a strong theology concerning the Second Adam. Here is a summary of the main features:-

1. Through Christ the gift of grace abounded to many (Cf. Romans 5:15).

2. The free gift of grace results in justification (Cf. Romans 5:18).

3. Through Christ’s righteous act (atonement) many were given imputed righteousness (Cf. Romans 5:19)

4. When Christ was raised from the dead, He became the firstfruits of all who are dead (and who now await their resurrection) (Cf. 1 Corinthians 15:20)

 

THE EXPRESS IMAGE OF GOD

The author of Hebrews made one of the strongest statements about the Divinity of Jesus in the following text:

“Who being the brightness of His glory
and the express image of His person…”

Hebrews 1:3

No matter how holy and blameless a man may be, he could never be described as one who bore the express image of God! Nobody in the entire Scriptures has ever been described as One who was “the express image of His (God) person” except the Lord Jesus Christ- the perfect Son of Man and Son of God!
