"Every priest stands ministering daily..."

Text: Hebrews 10:11

THE OLD PRIESTLY SYSTEM

The author of Hebrews was most familiar with the old Levitical system. The following text is a description of the daily work of these priests.

“And every priest stands ministering daily
and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices,
which can never take away sins.”
Hebrews 10:11

1. And every priest

a) There were many priests.

b) The whole tribe of Levi was consecrated as priests.

2. Stands ministering daily

a) The word “stands” has great significance.

i) It symbolizes their work.

ii) No priest was allowed to sit down when working.

iii) They were to be always standing when serving.

b) They were to minister daily.

i) There was no let up.

ii) The priests were divided into sections.

iii) Each group of priests must not fail to “minister everyday”.

3. Offering repeatedly the same sacrifices

a) “Repeatedly” means “every day”.

b) “The same sacrifices” would include all the prescribed sacrifices described in the Mosaic law.

4. Which can never take away sins

This was the solemn reality! No matter how many times these sacrifices were offered, they could never “take away sins”! The old law of God had to be taken away by the will of God. Christ came to fulfil God’s legal requirements and sanctified us.
