Hebrews
Day
Day 249

"Their sins and lawless deeds I will remember no more."

Text: Hebrews 10:17

THE BLESSINGS AND THE CURSES OF THE OLD COVENANT

The Mosaic Covenant featured both blessings and curses (Cf. Deuteronomy 27-28).

1. Glorious Blessings (Cf.Deuteronomy 28:1-14)

a) The promise of blessings was wonderful to read.
b) These blessings were contingent upon full obedience to the Laws of the Old Covenant.

2. Dreadful Curses

a) They were frightening.
b) These curses would come upon the people should they ever forsake the Lord and embraced idols instead.

THE PUNISHMENT OF ISRAEL/JUDAH

The Lord had to enter into judgment with both Israel and Judah because of their many sins!

1. Israel was conquered by the Assyrians in 722 BC (Cf. 2 Kings 17).

2. Judah was conquered by the Babylonians in 586 BC (Cf. 2 Kings 24-25).

3. Their sins brought their downfall:-

a) They had forsaken the Lord (Cf. Jeremiah 2:13, 17).
b) They had followed idols (Cf. Jeremiah 2:5).
c) They had chosen the path of wickedness (Cf. Jeremiah 2:19).

ONE GLORIOUS HOPE OF THE NEW COVENANT

One of the most glorious features of the New Covenant may be found in this text.

“Then He adds, ‘Their sins and their lawless deeds
I will remember no more.'”
Hebrews 10:17

1. Sins and lawless deeds would not be “remembered” by God anymore.

2. There will be no legal penalty meted out.

3. The punishment of our sins was borne by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!
