"By faith Abraham obeyed..."

Text: Hebrews 11:8

OBEDIENCE

One of the hardest things for man to do seems to be with reference to “obedience”. Few seemed to have learned how to obey!

DISOBEDIENCE

The Scriptures note sadly, the consequences of disobedience. Here is a short list:-

1. The disobedience of Adam and Eve cost them their stay in Eden and worse (Cf. Genesis 3).

2. The disobedience of the world in Noah’s generation caused the Great Deluge
(Cf. Genesis 6-8).

3. The disobedience of king Saul cost him his kingdom (Cf. 1 Samuel 15).

4. The perpetual disobedience of Israel resulted in the nation being conquered by the Assyrians in 722 BC (Cf. 2 Kings 17).

5. The perpetual disobedience of Judah caused the nation to be conquered by the Babylonians in 586 BC (Cf. 2 Kings 24-25).

THE OBEDIENCE OF ABRAHAM

The obedience of Abraham was brought out by the author of Hebrews in the following text.

“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out
to the place which he would receive as an inheritance.
And he went out, not knowing where he was going.”
Hebrews 11:8

1. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called

It took faith for Abraham to obey as he did. He was prepared to leave all in obedience to God.

a) He possessed that genuine faith even though he had just begun to be acquainted with God.
b) His faith taught him that this God was to be obeyed.

2. He went out not knowing where he was going.

a) This made Abraham’s faith and obedience even more remarkable.
b) Few seem to posses this combination of “faith and obedience”.
