Serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

Text: Hebrews 12:27 "

ENCOURAGEMENT TO SERVE GOD

There is every reason to serve God! The challenge is to serve Him “acceptably”. The following text offers a powerful suggestion of how we may serve God as He deserves to be served.

“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom
which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which
we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.”
Hebrews 12:29

1. Therefore

a) An inferential particle that introduces the idea of “appropriate response”.

b) Response is logical and necessary.

2. We are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken

a) This kingdom in essence already exists.

b) The final realization is yet future.

c) This kingdom is one in which all believers have a share.

d) This kingdom was the one Jesus proclaimed (Cf. Matthew 4:17 “The kingdom of heaven is at hand”).

3. Let us have grace

a) The word “grace” is chosen for good reason.

b) The focus on “grace” brings with it great humility to the heart.

c) This word reminds us that we are but only sinners saved by grace.

4. By which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and fear

a) Serving God acceptably must be the main focus.

b) Two main ideas stand out:-

i) Serving with grace in the heart.

ii) Serving with reverence and fear.
