Day 24

"Every transgression and disobedience received a just reward"

Text: Hebrews 2:2b

APPRECIATION OF THE WORD OF GOD

Not everyone knows how to appreciate the significance of God’s word. However the psalmist David seemed to have developed a deep sense of appreciation of the value of God’s word.

“The law of the LORD is perfect converting the soul;
The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;
The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;
The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold,
Yea, than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
Moreover by them Your servant is warned,
And in keeping them there is great reward.”

Psalm 19:7-11

DISREGARD FOR THE WORD OF GOD

Not everyone has such a high and correct regard for God’s word! More often than not, there is the danger of disregard for the word of the Lord. Grave danger attends those who show disregard for God’s word.

“Every transgression and disobedience received a just reward.”

Hebrews 2:2b

1. What is “transgression” (parabasis)?

a) It presupposes knowledge of God’s word.
b) Nevertheless the hearer deliberately crosses the lines drawn up in God’s laws.

2. What is “disobedience” (parakoe)?

a) This word suggests that “hearing” is involved.
b) There is a failure to hear and heed God’s word, resulting in not obeying Him.

3. A just reward

a) The word “just” (endikon) may be translated “deserved”.
b) The word “reward” (misthapodosian) carries the idea of “recompence”.

Angels carried tremendous authority as messengers of God’s word! Let us guard our hearts against “transgression and/or disobedience”.
