Day 26

"How shall we escape if we neglect..."

Text: Hebrews 2:3a

EVERY WORD OF GOD SPOKEN BY ANGELS/MEN

Every word of promise from the Lord always carries two elements (at least).

1. The promise of blessing should there be compliance (Cf. Deuteronomy 27-28)

The words Moses wrote are most striking!

“Then Moses and the priests, the Levites,
spoke to all Israel, saying:
‘Take heed and listen, O Israel:
This day you have become the people of
the LORD your God. Therefore you shall obey
the voice of the LORD your God, and observe His
commandments and His statutes which I command you today.'”

Deuteronomy 27:9-10

2. The warning of curses should there be rebellion (Cf. Deuteronomy 27-28)

Another powerfully written statement was uttered and recorded by Moses.

“But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey
the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully
all His commandments and His statutes which I command
you today, that all these curses will come upon you
and overtake you.”

Deuteronomy 28:15

MAKING A COMPARISON

In the following text, the author of Hebrews was making a strong comparison between the word brought by angels (and men) and the word brought by Jesus!

“How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation,
which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was
confirmed to us by those who heard him.”

Hebrews 2:3

Why was this text written? What purpose did this serve?

1. To highlight the fact that Jesus’ word carried great power and authority!

2. To cause readers to attune their ears well to listen (the teachings of Jesus).

3. Two things need to be highlighted:-

a) The significant quality of the Word proclaimed.
b) The significant quality of the Person called “the Lord” who proclaimed the word.

The author expressed deep concern that His word of salvation would be taken lightly.
