"With various miracles"

Text: Hebrews 2:4c

CONFIRMATION OF THE WORD OF SALVATION

God knows the heart of man only too well. Man had sinned so grievously that he would actually reject the word of salvation preached by Jesus and by those who heard Him! How would sinful man be convinced that this gospel of salvation proclaimed was true? The following text helps to explain God’s personal involvement in guiding people to believe in Jesus and the salvation He offers.

“God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders,
with various miracles?”
Hebrews 2:4c

1. Signs and wonders

This was one of the ways in which God sought to convince people of the glorious gospel of salvation! Jesus performed signs and wonders numerous times so that any fair-minded person would be convinced that His word was to be believed in! (The Gospel of John was written to help people believe in Jesus. The author, John the Apostle, selected different miracles of Jesus and called them “signs”. He only selected seven of them, although he had personally witnessed many more than he recorded in his gospel, Cf. John 20:30).

2. With various miracles (poikilais dunamesi)

Sometimes doubts creep into the mind and heart. Even mighty servants of God like John the baptizer had moments of doubt. To him (and others who struggle along similar veins) Jesus had this to offer.

“Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard:
that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed,
the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel
preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended
because of Me.”
Luke 7:22-23

a) A whole variety of miracles

The above text describes a whole variety of miracles Jesus performed! The sheer variety of miracles compels one to stand in wonder as to the power Jesus possessed.

b) Too many witnesses to be dismissed as fraud
i) The Gospels were written records of the miracles of Jesus.
ii) The original disciples of Jesus were still alive when Hebrews was written and they bore powerful witness.
c) God Himself bore witness

The power exhibited in the performance of miracles must be traced back to God Himself. He is the most important witness of all concerning the Person of Jesus Christ.
