"You have put all things in subjection under his feet"

Text: Hebrews 2:8

AN AWESOME HONOUR

God gave man an awesome wonder when He gave man dominion over all His creation on earth.

“You have put all things in subjection under his feet.”

Hebrews 2:8a

There is no mistaking God’s desire to bless man, the creature made in His own image! One of the most significant ways of honouring man was to “put all things in subjection under his feet”!

AN HONEST OBSERVATION

The author went on to make an honest observation about the fulfillment of the above text.

“For in that He put all in subjection under him,
He left nothing that is not put under him.
But now we do not yet see all things put under him.”

Hebrews 2:8b

1. Acceptance that God’s word was indeed true

a) There was no debate about the truth of God’s promise to bless man.
b) There was grateful acceptance of God’s plan to put all things in subjection to man.

2. Addressing an obvious problem

a) “But now”

The author of Hebrews was not a dreamer but a realist! He understood and appreciated what God had promised man. But the reality of life could not be denied. Man was not master as God had intended.

b) “We do not yet see”

The author was a keen student of the Scriptures and also of life. He could not help but realize that not all that God promised had been fulfilled.

c) “All things put under him”

That was God’s intention when He first created Adam (Cf. Genesis 1:26). This word to Adam was not meant just for him. It was meant for all mankind. God intended “all things to be put under (man)”.

The solemn reality had to be faced. Man is fighting for his own survival. He has not grasped fully the honour and the responsibility of having dominion over all that God had created. The author sought to apply the text of Psalm 8 in a unique way.
