Day 107

Let us therefore come boldly...

Text: Hebrews 4:16a

THE MAJESTY OF THE THRONE OF GOD

Great majesty surrounds the mighty throne of the Lord Jesus Christ! We must never lose sight of its glory and honour. Many texts in the Old Testament attempt to describe this throne. One famous text is found in the Book of Isaiah.

“I saw the LORD sitting on a throne, high and lifted up,
and the train of His robe filled the temple.
Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings:
with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet,
And with two he flew.”
Isaiah 6:1-2

Isaiah’s response to this sight of the throne of God must be noted.

“So I said, ‘Woe is me, for I am undone!
Because I am a man of unclean lips,
And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips.”
Isaiah 6:5

LET US COME BOLDLY

If Isaiah, a prophet of God trembled at the sight of the throne of God, how then, may we approach this glorious throne of the Lord?

1. Let us come boldly (“parresias”)

a) We are encouraged to come “as we are” (plainly).
b) We are encouraged to come confidently.

2. One what basis may we come boldly to this throne of grace?

Three things may be highlighted (they are closely inter-related):-

a) On the basis of the salvation we have in Jesus (Cf.Hebrews 2:10).
b) On the basis that we are called “brethren” of Jesus (Cf. Hebrews 2:11-12).
c) On the basis that we are called “children” of God (Cf. Hebrews 2:13).

3. Another important reason

The throne of God is indeed full of glory and honour! No one can come to that throne on his own merit!

This throne is well-described as one that is characterized by “grace”. This is one word that we must bear in mind strongly whenever we come to the throne of God. It is out of pure and abundant grace that we can approach the throne of the Lord Jesus Christ at all! Having this access to the throne of grace, let us indeed come to Him boldly!
